The last Tudor rose

The red roses in my garden are still blooming – a second round of their summer brilliance. The burnt, curling edges of the petals, herald the sombre shades of autumn.

the death of Dame Hilary Mary Mantel DBE FRSL

Guardian Obituary

New York Times

Where were you, what were you doing, when you heard the news?

Praise to BBC Radio 4 for changing their programming so quickly, to celebrate Dame Hilary’s wonderful life and works, repeating her Reith lectures, her interview with James Naughtie on Book Club, and with Michael Rosen on Word of Mouth. Much more available on BBC Sounds.

I paid tribute to Mantel’s writing, in one of my lockdown blogs.  All the time in the world – alphabetical days – B – savouring The Mirror and the Light,  the final book of the Wolf Hall trilogy.

What else is there to say? Our words can never equal her eloquence, intelligence and imagination.

Read her other works. Keep her alive in your heart and mind by reading – more and more of her wonderful legacy of literature. What better memorial.
